NOVEMBER 2007
- Weekend Turkey Shoot -- (11/20/07) The final field was
97 players, with a few no-shows that are being duly penalized. The
cut-off score was net 75 (assuming all players posted a 5 on the
18th hole, which was not included in the competition due to its
temporary green condition). A total of 50 players shot 75 or better and
won a "turkey". Top gross and net scores will be posted for information
purposes.

- Buick Invitational Needs Volunteers (11/12/07) --
Dear TPMGC Members:
Golf Operations -- Mark Woodward -- has asked for volunteers
from our Club to assist the grounds crew in daily raking of the sand
traps on the South during the Buick. There will be a training session
one week in advance of the Buick where we will be trained in how to
properly rake traps by the PGA TOUR. It is anticipated that we will be
raking all four days of the tournament. It should be lots of fun and
informative. Golf Operations is committed to "raising the bar" for
presentation of our course to the world and the TOUR during both the
Buick and the US Open. We need to show that we support Golf Operations
and are part of the "team" at Torrey Pines. If you are interested,
please contact Steve Roberts at (858) 335-8035 or email at
76bearsfly@sbcglobal.net

- No More Nine-Hole Handicap Index (11/08/07) -- I just received
word from the SCGA that as of November 1st, the SCGA will no longer
issue a nine-hole handicap index to its members. This change will not
affect the posting of nine-hole scores, but only a 18-hole index will be
maintained. As it was previously done, the handicap software will
automatically combine nine-hole scores and record a combined score in the
player's handicap index.

JUNE 2007
- COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF TPMGC (06/29/07) -- On June 29,
the Honorable Judge Joan Lewis granted TPMGC's motion to compel the City of
San Diego to adhere to the settlement agreement between the parties and
awarded us $5,100 in fees and costs incurred in bringing motions to enforce
the agreement. Specifically, the Judge ruled that players in our events
shall pay "resident" rates in accordance with the written agreement.
The specific language is: "(c) Greens fees applicable to TPMGC players
will be charged at the then posted resident rates with no tournament
fees or costs. " This provision in the agreement provides a substantial
benefit to our San Diego County members along with guests in our events
(particularly the annual Member/Guest event). The bottom line is that
for the next ten years players in all our events will pay resident
rates. Our attorney --Tom Lord, Esq.-- did a great job on our behalf. The
ruling/order is effective immediately.

- President's Corner (06/12/07) --
Congratulations to John Hoffman for his super
performance in the President's Cup. John shot a gross 2-under 142 on
the North/South for a net 138. This is truly a remarkable score under
tough conditions. Congratulations are also in order for Rick
Elliott and
Michael Simonsen for their fine performances in the local qualifying
rounds at Carlton Oaks for the SCGA Net Championships. Rick shot a net
70 to tie for first place in the Championship flight and Michael shot a
net 73 to qualify in the Vice-President's flight. Good show men!! Club
member Kim Johnson has also been hot this summer. Kim shot an 80 in the
US Open sectional qualifier at El Macero CC in Sacramento and advanced
to the Regional qualifier at Lake Merced CC in San Francisco. Kim shot a
77 to win the US Publinks qualifier at Eagle Ridge CC in Gilroy,
California to earn a spot at the US Championship Final Rounds to be held
at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky. Good luck Kim!!
The sign up for the August weekend event (Sanderson Two Better Ball of
Foursome) will be on course on August 11, 2007
at the TP lounge. Get
there early. Walt Block is chair of the event.
Slow play continues to be
a problem for our events. I urge everyone to be ready to hit the ball
within 20 seconds after it becomes their turn to play. Walk smartly to
your ball, do all your fiddling about and yardage calculations while
your opponents hit and then step up and hit it. Twenty seconds is more than
enough time to take two practice swings and do your pre-shot set up
routine. PLAY FAST BECAUSE IT IS MORE FUN!!

MAY 2007
- DON CLAUSEN (05/21/07) --
I read the news today about the passing of my good buddy, fellow golfer
and attorney, Don Clausen.
He was a player that everyone was delighted to be paired with as his
love for the game, good sportsmanship and common decency made for a very
enjoyable day on the links. He cared about others and was nothing short
of a true joy just to be around. For many years he and I were partners
in numerous charity golf events around town. He was the "go to" guy when
the chips were down and we needed a twelve foot birdie putt in a
scramble--he was always the fourth and final guy to try. More often than
not he made the putt to many resounding shouts of joy and high fives!! I
can remember him stalking the putts and doing his patented plumb bobbing
technique. I also remember him hitting the fairway with killer drives
after the first three of us blew the ball out of bounds. He had guts and
was real tough. Even though I am a true blue Cal Bear (Conference Champ
in swimming in 1976) I would start singing the SC fight songs before an
important shot that Don was getting ready to hit which would really get
him all pumped up!! During the car pool drives to various events we
would listen to sports talk radio and argue about who would win the
Cal/USC football game coming up that fall. We always had our $5 bet (I
always declined accepting the points which Don graciously would extend)
and we would always talk the day after over paying up promptly (almost
always I had to pay except for once which I always reminded him of!!) He
truly loved USC and would do anything for USC on a moments' notice. What
a guy!! I am really mad that when he finally retired from the US
Attorneys' Office and was all set to play mucho golf and really get into
USC affairs the good Lord decided it was his time to go. I guess that
all we can really take of this deal is that you better enjoy, and live
to the fullest, each and every moment of every day. Don certainly did
and I will really, really miss him. He was a true friend, colleague,
mentor, and buddy. We are seldom blessed with crossing paths with people
like Don in our lives. I would call him periodically after he was
diagonsed and he was always upbeat and more concerned about his family
and friends than himself. Here's to Don--a truly good sport and great
man. I am proud that we were buddies. This is the one time I will say it
and only because of Don: FIGHT ON USC!

MARCH 2007
- Weekend Schedule and May Sign-Up (03/21/07) -- The
TPMGC Weekend Schedule is now available.
The missing details will be added as we go along, always trying to accomodate
the course's schedule and needs. In addition, we've opened the weekend May
tournament sign-up. It's the SCGA
Better Ball of Partners. Back in the old times this event used to be
a 36-hole competition. This time it'll be over 18 holes on the South
course. Singles can sign up, but they're not guaranteed a spot in the
field. Also, the handicap spread between partners is limited to 6 (six)
strokes. In the event that the spread is larger, the higher handicap
will be reduced to comply with the required six-stroke difference.
- Wounded Marines Benefit Tournament (03/21/07) --
There will be a golf tournament on Monday, May 7th at Cottonwood to
benefit the wounded marines. More details and an entry form can be found in
the downloadable PDF

- Don Clausen Benefit Tournament (03/15/07) --
Hello Everyone,
Hard to believe a year has passed since the golf tournament last year.
As most of you know, Don is hanging in there. As we know, his spirits
are always high as he is excited about the new SC recruiting class and
the upcoming spring football practice. The funds from last years
tournament have come in handy as Sally has had to employ full time
assistance to help with Don everyday.
So, the 2nd Annual Don Clausen Masters Day tournament is again scheduled
at Maderas Golf club, Thursday April 5th. The cost is $160 which
will include the day of golf and a light reception afterwards and more
importantly an opportunity to say hi to Don and show him the support and
love we all have for him. For those of you who attended last year, it
was as Don said, "one of the best days of my life".
Please pass the word to people you know who want to show their support
to Don and his family. If you will email your desire to attend
individually or as a foursome, that would be great for planning.
We had 60 golfers last year, and I am sure we will exceed that number
this year. Checks are to be made out to Maderas Golf Club and mailed to
me at 14310 Horizon Court, Poway CA 92064. My cell number is
619-665-1335 with any questions.
I look forward to seeing you on the 5th and sharing the day with
you.
Regards,
Tony Rubino

- IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS (03/02/07) --
TORREY PINES MENS GOLF CLUB
THE BEST MUNICIPAL GOLF CLUB IN AMERICA
March 2, 2007
DEAR MEMBERS:
I am pleased to announce that our attorney has advised that the
City, Howard DeYoung, CRUPL, Hilton Hotels Corporations and its
franchisee--CHH Torrey Pines Hotel Partners, L.P., have now signed the
final Settlement Agreement resolving our lawsuit against the City of San
Diego. The Settlement acts to set in stone our continued presence at
Torrey Pines over the next ten years. The Settlement represents a
compromise on numerous issues by all parties. Although we did not obtain
all the relief we sought, the Settlement does provide substantial
benefits to our membership and the residents of San Diego. The key
points are: (i) two Thursdays per month with an extra hour of tee
times--6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; (ii) once a month weekend tournaments
with our traditional 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tee times; (iii) we are not
required to pay for, or ride in, golf carts; (iv) greens fees are at
resident rates with no tournament surcharges; (v) there are no yearly
surcharges/user fees imposed upon us; (vi) The City and Hilton will pay
us $130,000 split 50/50 to cover our attorney's fees and costs; and
(vii) the Hilton retains its 5 tee times per day. The Lodge is not a
party to the Settlement.
The Settlement provides a substantial economic benefit to the City
by way of the fees charged to the Hilton players while providing
organized tournament golf opportunities to the people of San Diego and
access to our U.S. Open course. I am confident that Francis Ouimet
(caddy at The Country Club at Brookline and 1913 U.S. Open Champion)
would approve of this development. He was one of us.
We are appreciative of Mayor Sanders and City Attorney Aguirre's
efforts to resolve the lawsuit in an equitable manner. We commend them
for their leadership. City Council Member Donna Frye was instrumental in
protecting and championing the rights of residents to play tournament
golf at Torrey Pines. The complete Settlement Agreement will be posted
on our website in the near future. We will now finalize our tournament
schedule for the upcoming year. Feel free to contact me if you have any
questions or comments.
