  • PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE SENIOR RATES

The Park and Recreation Board postponed the discussion of the elimination of senior rates for city residents until JULY 16th at 2:00 PM in the City Council Committee Room on the 12th floor of City Hall.  The change of date was made because not enough notice time had been given to take up the subject at the May 21st meeting.

The report to the City Council was a brief summary of golf activity since the 5 year plan was implemented in July of 2006 and showed fewer rounds being played at all three municipal facilities.   At the end of the report the Park and Recreational Board recommended that the senior discount rates SHOULD BE CONTINUED.  The full report can be seen here.

While this is good news for our seniors, we should be sure to attend the meeting on July 16th to voice our affirmation of their recommendation.

  • POSTING SCORES -- (02-26-09)
    Attention All Members

In auditing posted scores following tournament play, it appears that a number of our members are still failing to post their scores. Failure to post a score results in a penalty round being added to a member's index. Remember, a penalty round amounts to a posted round equal to the lowest handicap differential in the player's scoring record! There is absolutely no excuse for failing to post a round. Especially since our men's club has allowed members to post their scores on-line if posting at the course is impractical. Remember, the purpose of the Handicap System is to make the game more enjoyable by enabling golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. As a golfer's game changes, the system adjusts a player's Handicap Index up or down. The system disregards high scores that bear little relation to the player's potential ability and promotes continuity by making handicaps continuous from one year to the next. There is a breakdown in the system, however, if members do not post their scores. The basic premise underlying the USGA Handicap System is that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. All scores must be posted within 48 hours of playing in an event.  The scores can be posted at the course where the game was played, on-line at SCGA.ORG, or if you do not have access to a computer, then by calling me at 619.239.2186 and I can post the round for you.  THERE IS NO VALID EXCUSE FOR FAILING TO POST!

As always, should you have any questions with posting your scores, or your handicap in general, feel free to contact me at 619.239.2186 or by e-mail at: msberg@attglobal.net.

  • SCGA to adopt USGA's GHIN score posting and handicapping system in 2010-- (02/18/09) -

The SCGA and five other Southern California golf associations, which collectively represent nearly one-quarter million golfers, will shift to receiving support for their handicapping operations to the United States Golf Association's Golf Handicapping Information Network(r) (GHIN) beginning Jan. 1, 2010. The current system will remain in place through 2009.

Southern California will be the largest region of clubs and golfers in GHIN's stable of 68 state and regional associations and two international associations, which currently constitute nearly two million golfers. The Southern California associations' contract with its current handicap provider, Integrated Data Company (IDC), expires at the end of 2009.  "Although we have had a long, positive relationship with our current vendor," says Kevin Heaney, SCGA executive director, "in the end our board and staff felt unanimously that GHIN offers the best package of products and services as we move into 2010 and beyond."

Founded in 1899, the SCGA has more than 170,000 members in more than 1,200 clubs in Southern California and Baja California. "One of the determining factors in choosing GHIN," says Heaney, "is that a large number of our members belong to other associations, such as Northern California, that already use GHIN. These members will now have just one membership number and their scores will be integrated seamlessly among the various associations."

In addition to touch-screen posting monitors at each club, the ability for clubs to authorize online posting and for members to use online handicap lookup, two important changes will be instituted under the new system. Beginning in 2010, there will be twice-monthly revisions instead of the current monthly revisions and GHIN's tournament software program, TPP(r), will be available to all association clubs.
