TORREY PINES MENS' GOLF CLUB - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Q1- I noticed the new-member fees apply from October 1st of one year through September 30th of the following year. If I apply somewhere in between those two months, do I get to pay a pro-rated fee?

A1- No. The club fiscal year goes by the SCGA fiscal year. Part of your membeship fees goes to the SCGA for your SCGA membership and handicap maintenance. The SCGA does not pro-rate, so the TPMGC does not pro-rate either.

  • Q2- What do I get for my membership fee?

A2- When you become a Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club member, you are entitled to:

    • An official (SCGA/USGA) handicap index, which allows you to participate in any SCGA/USGA organized tournament, and in any tournament that requires an official handicap (City Amateur, etc).

    • Participate in any of the weekly (Thursday) and/or monthly (weekend) tournaments organized by the club. The tournaments are mostly played on either the North or South courses. Two Thursdays a month the tournament is played on a golf course other than Torrey Pines. Some tournaments are played over 36 holes and both courses are used. See the Thursday and Sunday tournament schedules for more detail.

    • SCGA and TPMGC bag tags, and SCGA Index Cards.

    • "FORE" Magazine, published monthly by the SCGA.

    • A TPMGC booklet explaining club procedures and regulations.

    • A Newsletter with club's news, information, tournament entry forms and results.

  • Q3- If I become a member of the TPMGC, do I get a break on greens fees and special consideration for tee times at Torrey Pines?

A3- Yes and No. The club is not directly connected with the City of San Diego, which manages the golf courses at Torrey Pines. You do get an assigned tee time every time you make the field for one of the club tournaments. You pay the tournament entry fee to the club, and the greens fees to the Starter at TP. TPMGC members, regardless of residence, pay "resident fees" when playing in a club tournament." If you are a City Resident and have a Resident Card you also get a substantial discount on the greens fees anytime you play Torrey Pines, but if you are not a City resident you still pay non-resident fees when playing a casual round or a round not related to a club tournament.

  • Q4- I have a complain/suggestion/idea that I'd like to put under consideration to the Board of Directors of the club. Or I would like to get involved in the club organization? How do I do that?

A4- You may either send a letter to the board (mailing address is: 7770 Regents Rd, #518, San Diego, CA 92122), or attend one of the monthly board meetings (usually on the third Tuesday of every month at the Torrey Pines lounge, by the Pro-Shop, at 6:30pm). The club also holds three General Meetings (January, May, and November). Members are encouraged to attend. Elections to the board are held at the November General Meeting. The General Meetings include free beverages and a raffle of golf merchandise and equipment (raffle tickets are usually $1/ticket). New members attending the meeting get one FREE raffle ticket. The May General Meeting is usually preceded by a putting and chipping contest. The dates of the General Meetings are announced in the Newsletter and the club's web page.

  • Q5- I'm under 18 years old and would like to become a JUNIOR MEMBER of TPMGC to maintain a handicap. Do I get to play in the tournaments too?

A5- No. Junior members DO NOT get to play in the club tournaments. Junior memberships are available so Junior golfers can maintain an official SCGA handicap index.

  • Q6- The name of the club seems to indicate that it's a men only club. Is this correct?

A6- No. The name Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club has been kept for historical reasons since the club foundation in 1957. The club is open to men and women alike. We currently do have members who are women, which get to participate in tournaments alongside men if so desired.

  • Q7- I belong to another SCGA club and would also like to join the TPMGC. Do I still pay the full membership fee? Do I get ANOTHER SCGA number?

A7- Yes, you still must pay the full membership fee. We don't get a discount from the SCGA either. However, you get to use your already active SCGA number. You become a multi member and all your posted scores are entered in your record under the same number.

  • Q8- What kind of prizes do I get when I place well in a club tournament?

A8- The members voted NOT to receive trophies for good performance in any club tournament, but instead have their "winnings" put on their "prize account" with the club. Even though the prize is money, members do NOT get cash (against "amateur status" rules, per USGA). If a member redeems all or part of his winnings, the club "Prize Fund Chairman" issues a certificate that can be exchanged for golf merchandise or equipment at various golf stores in the area, including the Pro-Shop at Torrey Pines.

  • Q9- In addition to the Newsletter, how do I get information about tournament tee times, results, schedule, etc?

A9- The club maintains a web page for the benefit of all members. If you are reading this FAQ list, you probably already found the club's web page. It's located at www.tpmgc.org.
