THURSDAY EVENTS
PLAYER SELECTION METHOD
The
player selection method used for the Thursday events is a computerized process
which generates start-time and wait lists based on an equitable system of
priorities designed to give all players an equal opportunity to play during the
year.
The process does not take
the method, place, or time of signup into consideration.
Signup can be done on-line,
at the course, or by phone. Signups are
open for approximately twelve days. Signup
closes at
The priorities are determined in four basic steps:
1. Individual Priority Number Calculation:
Individual priority levels are first calculated and assigned to each player who has signed up for a tournament as follows:
Priority 0: This is the highest priority level. It includes Board Members and Volunteers who are currently working for the club as Tournament Organizer, Marshal, Entry Fee Collector, Webmaster, etc. and some guests, as allowed by club rules. This category, on average, accounts for about 16 players.
Priority 1: If you did not play the last event and do not have a start time for the next event.
Priority 2: If you played in the last event but do not have a start time for the next event.
Priority 3: If you did not play in the last event but have a start time for the next event.
Priority 4: If you played the last event and have a start time for the next event.
Note: If the subject tournament is a monthly tournament (MT) where the club subsidizes the prize fund, and you played in the last MT, an additional point is added to the priorities above (i.e. priority 1 becomes priority 2 and priority 4 becomes priority 5, etc.). This is done to give the players who missed the previous MT a 1 point bias for a start time in the upcoming MT)
2. Group Priority Number Calculation:
Since the majority of signups are groups of individuals ranging from 2 to 4, the second step is to calculate a group priority number. This number is the simple average of the individual priorities of the members of the group.
3. Start Time Priority Number Assignment:
Once the Priority numbers are calculated, each individual or group is segregated into their respective priority number category, i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
A list of random numbers is generated and pasted along the column of signups. The random numbers, along with the associated names, are then sorted within each priority group into an ascending sequence so the entries are placed in a numerical order.
4. Assignment of Starting Times:
The Priority 0 players are first assigned starting times.
Next, the first player or group of players in the Priority 1 category is assigned a time. This time will be as near as possible to his or their requested time*. The next assignment is to the second player or group of players in the Priority 1 category etc. When all of the signups in the Priority 1 category have been assigned start times, the start time assignment continues on to the Priority 2 category players etc
*Note: While an effort is made to satisfy every preferred time request, as the selection process continues farther down the priority list, it becomes more difficult to assign a tee time close to the requested time.
When all available start times have been assigned, the remaining players are assigned to the wait list in the order of their priority status.
The tee-times and wait lists are posted on the TPMGC web site www.tpmgc.org, usually 10 days before the
event is to occur. The lists are also posted on the TPMGC bulletin board
in the public lounge at the course. Check either place to see if you have
a starting time. If you do, arrive at the course at least 1/2 hour early
to prepare a scorecard and to read the rules.
